Acne and Pimples

The aggravation of tridosha or the three energies of the body results in the occurrence of acne, pimples and blackheads. In all pitta dosha is effected the most and it happens so due to the excessive intake of alcohol, tea, coffee, spicy, oily and fried foods.

Stress, tension, pollution and chemicals are also among the major causes that aggravates Pitta dosha and result in acne, boils, pimples and rashes.

Remedies
A paste made from one teaspoon each of sandalwood powder and turmeric mixed with milk, is very good. A paste of nutmeg and water is also beneficial.
Half a cup of Aloe Vera pulp can be taken internally (Do not take internally if pregnant) or applied externally to the skin. Dosage: Twice a day.

Pigmentation

Imbalance of Bhrajaka Pitta that colors the skin and can be compared to melanin causes blackening, pigmentation and discoloration of skin. Excessive exposure to the sun, irregular eating, sleeping habits and consumption of foods and drinks that aggravate pitta are responsible for the aggravation of bhrajka pitta also.

Premature Aging

This is due to the aggravation of vata dosha, which naturally increases with age. Thus aging is something that can be prevented to come to early but can't be cured as such. It's a natural ongoing process and beyond human limit to control it.

Aging causes dryness and wrinkling of the skin. Factors like excessive thinking, stress, tension, over work, strain, irregular sleeping and eating habits and cold or dry foods enhance aging. Foods containing artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and chemicals also aggravate the Vata dosha and fasten aging.

Remedies
Massage the face with ghee, almond oil or coconut oil before going to bed.
Use grated cucumber in a face pack.
Apply fresh aloe Vera gel to the skin.

CELLULIT REDUCTION

Cellulite is the lumpy, dimpled skin which appears mainly on hips, thighs and buttocks. It is, in fact, the subcutaneous fat deposit or the fat deposit on the conjunctive tissue under the skin. The fatty dimpled skin appearance is also known as the 'cottage cheese' or 'orange peel' appearance. It is mainly a woman specific disorder and not a disease.

Symptoms
Feeling of pain at touching
Presence of a micro or macro nodules (felt when touched)
Stretch marks
Wrinkles
Feeling similar to pins and needles prick
Muscular pain
Tiredness
Back/neck ache
Feeling of coldness/nervousness, etc.

Causes
Aggravated Kapha dosha

Pathogenesis
Cellulite is identified by Ayurveda as 'Vasa'- the heavy, saturated type of fat tissue. When this saturated fat interacts with digestive impurities or 'Ama', it results in cellulite. It is a localized effect. This heavy, sticky substance-the cellulite- when sits in the fat cells, is very difficult to eliminate. The longer it sits there, more difficult it is to remove. The link between the Vasa fat and the Ama impurities have to be broken if one aims at cellulite reduction. For this kapha provoking diet- diet rich in fats- has to be avoided. According to ayurveda, the 'agni' or fiery condition for metabolizing fat is known as 'meda agni.' When meda agni under the skin gets low or does not works properly, the unprocessed fat molecules get deposited under the skin and results in cellulite. Thus, the meda agni has to be activated or kindled to treat cellulite.

Treatment
Ayurvedic treatment for cellulite reduction include a combination of right type of diet, ayurvedic massages (specially gharsana and udvartana), and yoga. However, many herbs are also used to reduce cellulite which are as follows:

Dandelion: It flushes toxins out of the body and helps the body to rebuild cells and tissue that had been saturated with and damaged by toxins and other waste matter. Have it in salads or herbal tea.
Gotu Kola: It helps the body to heal, giving it power to repair cells and the connective tissue that helps cellulite to become more visible. It also strengthens the walls of veins to ensure that nutrients and toxins do not escape. The nutrients go where they need to go and toxins are flushed out of the body. Gotu Kola can be used in herbal paste for udvartana massage.
Parsley: It is a detoxifying agent, cleanses the blood, and eliminates toxins from the connective tissue in the area affected by cellulite.
Milk Thistle: It flushes waste products out of the liver. It also helps with the blood circulation.
Horse Chestnut: It has anti-inflammatory properties. It soothes any cellulite inflammation and helps the circulatory system also.
Grape Seed Extract: It helps the collagen in the connective tissue and skin and make it more elastic thus preventing the appearance of cellulite.
Gingko Biloba: It is an antioxidant and oxidises the fatty cells under the surface of the skin. Thus any kind of build ups, like cellulite, can not develop. It also strengthens the veins and boosts blood circulation.
Kelp: It is a vital source of iodine which affects the thyroid. The iodine boost the action of the thyroid and helps in fat metabolism thus burn the fats off. It also helps to flush any excess water out of the body.

Recipes
Ayurvedic detoxyfying recipes are useful for cellulite reduction.
Kapha Tea: Take 1/4 teaspoon each of dry ginger, dill seed, fenugreek seed, 1 clove , and 1 cup water. Mix all the ingredients. Boil the water and add the herb mixture to it. Steep for 5 minutes. Strain and have it to balance kapha dosha.
Kapha Churna Seasoning: Mix fenugreek, cumin, black pepper and ginger and ground them into powder. Add this seasoning to your diet. It reduces Ama- the digestive impurities. Don't take it in excess as these hot spices can aggravate your Pitta.

Panchkarma
Panchkarma is highly recommended for cellulite reduction.

Gharsana or the dry massage is done with the help of raw silk gloves. This exfoliates the skin and breaks up fatty deposits apart from energizing blood circulation.
In udvartana massage, a herbal powder made up of natural nourishing ingredients such as almond oil, chickpea flour, turmeric powder and fenugreek powder is used to reduce cellulite accumulations, improve circulation and enhance the skin's texture and appearance.
Ayurvedic diet for your body type is recommended. Kapha aggravating food is recommended to be avoided.
Massage with sesame and mustard oil (in equal proportions) is also recommended for removing cellulite. After this type of massage, the powder of calamus herb or 'bacha' should be rubbed on the skin.

MEDICINES FOR PAINS

Names like Maharasnayogarajaguggul and Kottam-chukkadi, which need to explode from your mouth when pronounced correctly. To manage them, they need to be broken up in bits, as in maha-rasna-yogaraja-guggul.

These and dozens of others are herbal oils and potions according to ayurveda. They have seen me gradually come out of the burning pains in knees, shoulders and indeed all joints, following an attack of rheumatoid arthritis. They were the alternative as compared to the strong pain-killers that allopathy would prescribe. In fact, modern medicine, not having yet found a cure for rheumatoid arthritis, would have me sit in a wheelchair all my life, gobbling those pain-killer pills and vegetating.

And thus began my tryst with ayurveda. Arya Vaidyan P.K. Ezhuthacchan, whose name was as bombastic as the procedures and decoctions that he prescribed, specified my temperament as vata, and said there are medicated oils like Ksheerabala,
Balaguluchyadi and Karpasastyadi (that’s karpas-astyadi) for it.

Even stanyadhara (requiring breast milk) was considered. It was to be combined with Pacchhakarpoora or Gorochana. Anyway, with or without Pacchhakarpoora, the proposal of that treatment was dropped. But Kuzhampu for the body was considered, including oils like Prabhanjanavimardhana (that’s prabhanjan-vimardana) and Bala-swa-gandhadi.

There are treatments for other ailments — with equally bombastic names. There is Madhu-snuhira-sayanam-brihat, effective for wounds, fistula, scabies, itch and so on. For the same troubles, Mani-bhadra-gudayogam is also a possibility. Then there is Madana-kameshwaram, also known as Sarva-rogachikitsa-ratnam, which preceded Viagra by centuries. It helps digestion to boot, stops diarrhoea and vomiting, even makes one hungry.

If you have fever, you could ask your vaidya if you should take Chukkum-tippalayadi gulika, with ginger juice. The upshot is that ayurvedic bombs have helped me cock a snook at modern medicine: I am not vegetating, not in a wheelchair. In fact I drive my two-wheeler and car, don’t need pain-killers and go for my morning walk, albeit with a bit of doddering. I even use my stationary cycle for 10 minutes (1,200 strokes). Hooray for Kottam-chukkadi (oil for joint massage) and with it, to be taken inwards, is Maha-yoga-raja-rasnadi-guggul.

WEIGHT LOSS

In ayurveda, Charak Samhita describes eight different types of bodies that are disease prone. Out of these, the obese body is described as the one afflicted with the most diseases and troubles. Obesity is the condition or physical state of the body when excessive deposition of fat takes place in the adipose tissue.

Extra fat puts a strain on the heart, kidneys, liver and the joints such as the hips, knees and ankles and thus, overweight people are susceptible to several diseases like coronary thrombosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, gout, liver and gall bladder disorders. Chief cause of obesity is overeating, irregular eating habits and not following the rules of eating or mixing non-compatible food items in one meal.

To decrease weight and get rid of obesity three things must be kept in mind:

MENOPAUSE REMEDY

Menopause is a natural hormone (estrogen) deficient state that occurs at the age of 45-55 years. After the age of 40 years, ovaries reduce their production of sex hormones. As a result, the menses as well as other body functions are disturbed. Finally the menses cease permanently. This ultimate pause is described as menopause. Needless to say that this phase also marks the end of fertility in a woman. Irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and itching, and mood swings-- all these are typical symptoms of menopause. Osteoporosis (thinning and weakening of bones), heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease (progressive loss of memory and concentration) are the long-term hazards of menopause. With an increase in life expectancy, menopause has become an inevitable phenomenon in a woman's life and many years are spent in the postmenopausal phase. In this millennium, a woman perceives menopause as an opportunity to concentrate on new activities and bring out the best in her. Consequently, treatment of this transitional phase has now gained more importance than ever before.
Some of the common symptoms are -
1]Anaemia, Weakness,
2]Feeling of intense heat in your body on some occasions
3]Profuse sweating at night
4]Excessive falling of hair,
5] Irregular menstrual periods with excessive or scanty bleeding,

7]vaginal dryness and itching
8]Joint pain,
9] Oedema,
10]Irritable nature,
11] Sleeplessness Lassitude.

According to allopathic medicine normally physicians prescribe 'H.R.T.' ( Hormone Replacement Therapy). In this cyclical treatment with Estogen and Progesteron is given.Besides being expensive, H.R.T. is apprehended by many women because of the associated risk of developing breast and uterine cancers. H.R.T. is also contraindicated in women with hypertension, myocardial infarction, recent blood clots, migraine headaches, liver disease and gall bladder disease.

Ayurved, the science of life, advocates a holistic treatment of menopausal syndrome by utilizing various herbs and minerals and offers a reliable option to the conventional treatment.

Simple Ayurvedic remedies are very useful in these conditions. They use substances known as phytoestrogens that are estrogen-like substances derived from plants. They mimic the actions of the estrogens in the body but are free from their side-effects.

Useful Ayurvedic preparations are Ashokarishta, Dashamularishta, Ashok Ghana, Dashamool Ghana, Lodhra Ghana,Manjishtha Ghana, Trivang Bhasma etc.
